Destitution commonplace for recognised refugees in GR – RLS’s Lucy Alper speaks to the Guardian

RLS’s legal coordinator in Athens, Lucy Alper, explains how a positive decision isn’t the end of refugees’ worries in Greece. “It is commonplace that people granted protection status in Greece face destitution and homelessness following their positive asylum decision”. RLS acted to ensure the family received asylum applicant cards. The asylum service failed for months to provide them with an ID, a basic necessity which they needed to be safe from arbitrary arrest and to access their basic rights.
